Best Times to Visit Puerto Vallarta

There may be no straight answer when it comes to the best time to visit Puerto Vallarta, though a simple answer may be from the months of April right through to June, and then in October. But there are a number of factors that come to play, and since different people will have different preferences and will be looking forward to varying Puerto Vallarta experiences, best times to visit or to enjoy your luxury rental in Mexico, will always vary.

Best time for perfect weather

If you are thinking about booking luxury villas in Puerto Vallarta or luxury rentals in Puerto Vallarta and want to time your visit with perfect weather, then the best time to visit is from December through to May. The average temperatures during these months is about 300C in the afternoon with very cool evening breezes. The sea temperatures are also very cool, thus making it ideal for any kind of water sport you may be interested in during your vacation.

Though Puerto Vallarta is right at the edge of a rainforest, precipitation is not a great concern during these months since they are generally dry months. July through to September is usually Monsoon Season, and this may not be the ideal time to come if you hate it when it is wet outdoors or if you wanted to spend a lot of time on the beach.

Best time to visit with family and kids

If you are planning on visiting Puerto Vallarta with your family, then visit from April through to June, and again from mid-October through to mid-November. April and May are particularly good for family visits because the crowds are thinning after Spring Break and also before the summer rains begin to pound. These months are characterized by warm, sunny days with moderate temperatures.

Since the crowds are already leaving, the room rates are relatively affordable, and this can lead to great savings if you have a large family. For the warmest temperatures for family travels, consider the months of May and June.  This is also the best time if you considering activities such as scuba diving or snorkeling. This is because the waters are warm and clear. October and November may also be suitable for visiting with families, though you will have to contend with hot weather and high room rates since the crowds will begin coming back at this time.

Best time to avoid the crowds

It seems like the low season in Puerto Vallarta is getting shorter every year, but if you don’t like crowds during your visits, then you should travel from July through to September. This is the period just before the Mexican vacation season and also just before the international travel high season.

At this time of the year, very few people are traveling, and both hotels and flight rates are heavily discounted. But you should also be aware of the downsides of traveling at this time. For example, since there are fewer tourists, it may be difficult to schedule excursions, since most of the tour companies will avoid operating with low numbers. Again, this is the rainy season in Puerto Vallarta, with tropical rain storms at least once every day and sometimes for up to half a day.

Best time for surfing

Surfing is one of the reasons why thousands, if not millions of people travel to Puerto Vallarta every year. The region is blessed with not just wonderful weather, but it is also the home to some of the best surf sports in the world. Though Sayulita may have a bigger name when it comes to surfing in Mexico, the tides in Puerto Vallarta between the months of December and April make great conditions for a surfing experience.

At this time of the year, the waves are the right sizes and speeds, ideal for surfing for both beginners and the pros. Surfing is also possible outside these months, but the waves may not be the right ones for a great surfing experience, especially between the months of June and September when the waves are short and flat.

Best time for whale watching

If you are interested in watching whales during your vacation, then the best time to visit Puerto Vallarta is between November and April. The humpback whales will start trooping in mid-November, and they won’t leave until early April. If you want to see them in large numbers, then visit between mid-December and mid-March. During this time, you will be treated to spectacular views of male whales trying to compete for the females for mating. The first baby whales will be born around January, and as the weeks advance, they become stronger, more active and better swimmers, treating you to more displays from February through to March.

Best time for visiting the jungles

If you are interested in hiking the Botanical Gardens, zip lining through the canopies or going for an excursion in the Mismaloya Jungle, then you should visit between the months of December and April. These are the coolest months in Puerto Vallarta, with average temperatures being between 270C and 300C. During this time, the skies are clear, with lots of moderate winds, thus making any outdoor activity extremely refreshing. The worst time you may want to explore the jungle is between the months of July and September since this is when the area receives a lot of rains, which will not just lead to wet outdoors, but also there will be a lot of mosquitoes.

Best time for sport fishing

The fish in Puerto Vallarta bite every single day of the year, but the fish you catch will vary from season to season. For a huge variety of fish, visiting from September through to December is highly recommended. This is the time when varieties such as black, blue and striped marlin are available in plenty. You will also not miss the presence of wahoo, sailfish, and mahi mahi at this time of the year. For tuna and grouper fishing, the warmer months of June through to September are the most ideal.
